Greener Pastures

Posted on June 8, 2020April 20, 2022 by alexis

Don’t cite the words

I see that you wrote.

You cannot prove truth

in your personal quote.

That book that you read?

You inverse the pages

to prove themselves

in fallible stages.

But I’m less convinced

as time carries on,

since I’m out of the box

you’ve so delicately drawn.

If you’d left it open

to stories that teach

I wouldn’t have left,

in search of high reach.

We suffer from guidance

meant for elite, pious few

and more of us leave

for greener pastures that grew.

Instead of evolving

with knowledge and breadth,

you’ve fallen behind

in self-righteous missteps.

Now it’s hard to believe

that there’s good underneath

when I’ve seen all the hurt

that’s armed to the teeth.

You call it your truth,

but truth’s not subjective,

and like a cult, we can’t leave

because our family’s infected.

So, try as I might

to reason all doubt,

I feel pulled to just leave

in the wake of devout.
